Apollo Wong

Bass-baritone Apollo Wong, a native of Hong Kong, received his graduate degree in vocal studies at the University of California at Los Angeles under the supervision of Vladimir Chernov and Juliana Gondek.

Wong’s operatic roles include the Superintendent Budd and Bottom in Britten’s Albert Herring and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ariodante in Handel’s Serse, Frère Laurent and Le Duc in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Un Mandarino in Puccini’s Turandot, Zuniga in Bizet’s Carmen, Barone Trombonok in Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims, among others.  He has worked with conductors such as Paolo Olmi, Renato Palumbo, Joseph Rescigno, Francois-Xavier Roth and Long Yu.  His oratorio repertoire includes Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Faurè’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Dixit Dominus, Haydn’s Stabat Mater, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion, Cantata BWV 80 and BWV 140, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, among others. 

Wong is the winner of both Palm Springs Opera Guild Vocal competition and the Pasadena Opera Guild Vocal Scholarship.  His European debut was at La Fenice Sale Apollinee, Venice, Italy.

Wong is also an active conductor. He is the Music Director Laureate of The Hong Kong Youth Choir and has been Music Director of the Learners Chorus since 2005.  He has led them in many successful concerts such as Mozart’s Requiem, Prokoviev’s Alexander Nevsky and Magnificats by Bach and John Rutter.
